Owens & Minor

Developed a custom web app to standardize hospital supply chain assessments, achieving $1.1M in annual savings, 95% reduction in assessment time, and 30x faster proposal response times.

01

Challenge

Owens & Minor's hospital supply chain and logistics assessment process was inefficient and inconsistent, relying heavily on Excel spreadsheets or pen and paper. This manual approach led to lengthy assessment times, high costs of sale, and low conversion rates due to inconsistent proposals.

02

Action

To address these challenges, I led the development of a custom web app to standardize and streamline the assessment process. Key actions included:

  • Backlog Development: Collaborated with cross-functional teams to gather insights and build a comprehensive backlog for the web app. This backlog incorporated the best practices and expertise from various assessment teams within the company.
  • Design Leadership: Led the design phase of the web app, ensuring it was user-friendly, intuitive, and capable of standardizing the assessment process across all teams.
  • Development Oversight: Oversaw the development of the web app, working closely with developers to ensure the application met the necessary functionality and performance requirements. Focused on creating features that would streamline the assessment process and automate proposal generation.
  • Process Standardization: Implemented standardized assessment criteria and automated the generation of final presentations and artifacts. This ensured consistent and high-quality deliverables for educating customers and closing sales.
03

Results

The implementation of the custom web app led to significant improvements in efficiency, cost savings, and proposal effectiveness:

  • Annual Savings: Achieved $1.1 million in annual savings by reducing manual efforts and optimizing the assessment process.
  • Assessment Time Reduction: Reduced assessment times by 95%, allowing teams to complete evaluations more quickly and efficiently.
  • Proposal Response Time Improvement: Improved proposal response times by 30x, enhancing the ability to provide timely and consistent proposals to potential clients.

Questions

How did the hospital assessment app save $1.1M annually?

The custom web app standardized hospital supply chain assessments, reducing assessment time by 95% and enabling 30x faster proposal response times, which translated to $1.1M in annual savings.

What problem did the hospital assessment app solve?

The app replaced a manual, time-intensive hospital supply chain assessment process that required significant travel and inconsistent methodologies across assessors, standardizing it into a digital tool.

How did the app standardize the assessment methodology?

The app embedded a consistent assessment framework into a digital tool, ensuring every assessor followed the same methodology regardless of location, eliminating variability and improving proposal quality.

What was the assessment process like before the app?

Before the app, hospital supply chain assessments were conducted manually with significant travel, inconsistent methodologies across assessors, prolonged turnaround times, and high costs — all of which the digital tool eliminated.

How many hospitals used the assessment app?

The assessment app was deployed across Owens & Minor's hospital network, standardizing the supply chain assessment process at scale and enabling remote assessments that reduced both travel costs and turnaround times.
